For comfort, I usually wait until work to put my tie on (I learned this trick back when I wore my tie in high school).

One simple rule for when I wear I put my tie on at work (and I have been following this rule since I started working): if I can make it to my desk without being stopped with a question and have a chance to sit down and open my computer, my next action is to put on my tie.

If somehow this flow is interrupted, the tie never makes it to my neck for the rest of the day. That simple.
